Highlights from the final day…

A glorious London International Music Show came to an end yesterday, and a quick glance through day one’s, day two’s and day three’s highlights (not to mention day four’s must-see content below), proves what a stella year 2009 turned out to be.

We’re leading the final day with a shoe-tapping performance from Albert Lee and some ‘ingenius’ new product in the shape of the Mark Bass MoMark. And, of course, one or two oddities from the show floor… see you next year!

The most blingin’ headphones award goes to…

Organised by online magazine All Out Guitar, and Lick Library, Guitar Idol 2009 saw the public and professional judges select the best guitarists from around the world.

The 12 Finalists came from all over the globe including, Brazil, Ecuador, Bosnia, Italy, Chile and were be invited to play live in front of thousands in London and take home fabulous prizes from sponsors including Marshall, PRS, Ernie Ball/MusicMan, Blackstar Amplification, Mayones Guitars, The Guitar Institute and Rock School.

Live judges included Phil Hilborne, Jamie Humphries and Jamiroquai’s Rob Harris, and the overall winner was chosen by public vote on a live webcast sent out all over the world, on a unique online voting system broadcast here.

The winner, Jack Thammerat won a high end PRS guitar, Marshall JVM amplifier and double stack cabinets plus additional sponsors prizes.

Master Guitar Virtuoso, Steve Vai, bought his Alien Guitar Secrets master class to the 2009 London International Music Show at ExCeL exhibition centre.

This was Vai’s only UK appearance this year and culminated in a special performance guesting with the Phil Hilborne band featuring Nicko McBrain on drums.

The series of two sold out master classes was a unique and once in a lifetime opportunity for the select few people to hear Steve discuss guitar techniques, the music business and a few attendees were able to jam with Steve in this intimate environment.

The day also saw a host of stars play the show’s main stage including Grammy award winning country picking guitarist, Albert Lee, the critically acclaimed band, Swans in Flight featuring bass players Marco Mendoza and TM Stevens and killer guitarist Jan Akkermann.

Throughout the day there were a host of signings from special guests including Black Stone Cherry, Doug Wimbish and Steve Diggle from the Buzzcocks.

“We had this brilliant idea to work hard to get our show stocks ready in time for LIMS,” reads the sign next to a guitar wrapped in brown paper on Moose Guitars‘ barren stand. “We shot, and we missed.”

The people behind Moose Guitars, you see, used to make one-off custom guitars and basses on commission only. They were half-way through this Tele-shaped beauty below, when the draw of doing it full-time became too appealing to resist…

So, Moose Guitars was born… they just don’t have any stock, yet: “Look out for Moose Guitars England, launching [again] on July 1.”

While the mother of all metronome videos was caught at NAMM 09 with the birth of ‘Metronomica’, Sonic Ventures brings its own take on beat-keeping to LIMS 09.

The Pacemaker is a metronome in the shape of a mini kick drum. It uses ‘realistic bass and snare sounds’, runs on a 9V battery and you can customise the skin with your own artwork.

According to the guys on the Sonic Ventures stand, The Pacemaker’s inspiration came from last year’s show. They wanted to recreate the feeling of jamming with a real drummer. A portable one! Nice…

‘Behind’ the scenes

You might remember 1991’s film adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s novel of the same name: The Commitments. In a nutshell, it’s about a soul band. That same group took to the stage at Peavey’s party on Thursday night… and MusicRadar snuck in a video camera.

So apologies about the audio quality, but it was filmed by a camera small enough to fit into a trilby with a hole cut into it. Here’s Mustang Sally…
